INSURANCE

TRAVEL insurance can provide cover for medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost luggage, flight accidents and other losses incurred while traveling, either internationally or domestically.

TRAVEL insurance can be arranged to provide cover for a single trip or to cover multiple trips within a set period of time. Some policies offer lower and higher medical-expense options; the higher ones are chiefly for countries that have higher medical expenses.

Some credit card issuers offer automatic travel insurance if travel arrangements are paid for using their credit cards, but these policies are generic and particular care must be taken to take into account personal requirements. There are many travel insurance policies available in the marketplace, but care must be taken with regard to what events are covered by each policy, as well as what exclusions, exceptions and limits apply, besides other issues.

When tourists are involved in accidents on the island, Sri Lankan Government Hospitals will provide emergency medical care. However, tourists should not travel to the island without adequate insurance. Each traveller must select a travel insurance policy that would best provide adequate cover to suit their own trip and circumstances.

Some important aspects we look for when purchasing travel insurance:

1. Sufficient coverage to pay for both injuries and sudden illness

2. Pays for transportation costs back to home country if necessary

3. Emergency evacuation and hospital care cover.

4. Cover for valuables should they get lost or stolen

5. Coverage for scuba diving and extreme activities

6. Twenty-four-hour emergency contact number to get assistance.
